A Parent’s Guide to Your Child’s First Dental X-Ray

Your child’s first dental X-ray is an important milestone in their oral health journey. While it’s completely normal for parents (and kids!) to feel a little unsure, dental X-rays are a safe, quick, and valuable tool that helps your dentist see what’s happening beneath the surface.

Why Are Dental X-Rays Needed?

Even with a thorough visual exam, dentists can’t always detect issues hiding between teeth or below the gums. X-rays allow your dental team to check for cavities, monitor tooth development, and ensure permanent teeth are coming in properly. They can also help identify early signs of crowding or alignment concerns before they become bigger problems.

When Will My Child Need Their First X-Ray?

Every child is different, but most children will have their first dental X-rays taken around age 5 or 6, once their teeth begin to touch and permanent teeth start developing. Your dentist will recommend X-rays based on your child’s individual needs, risk for cavities, and stage of growth—not just age alone.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe?

Yes—modern dental X-rays are very safe. Today’s technology uses extremely low levels of radiation, and protective measures like lead aprons and digital imaging further minimize exposure. In fact, the amount of radiation from a dental X-ray is very small—often less than what you’d experience during everyday environmental exposure.

How to Help Your Child Feel Comfortable

Preparation can make all the difference. Explain the process in simple, positive terms, letting your child know it’s quick and painless. You might describe it as “taking a picture of your teeth.” Reassure them that they’ll just need to sit still and gently bite on a small tab for a few seconds.

Bringing comfort items or scheduling the appointment at a time when your child is well-rested can also help create a more relaxed experience.

What Happens Next?

After the X-rays are taken, your dentist will review the images with you and explain any findings. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about your child’s dental development.

At Holman Family Dentistry, we’re committed to making every visit a positive one for your child. From gentle care to clear communication, we’re here to ensure your child feels safe, confident, and supported every step of the way.
