Oral hypersensitivity can be caused by numerous things, including allergies, injuries, and gum recession. If you are experiencing sensitivity, there are a few things you can do to reduce the sensitivity and allow yourself to enjoy both hot and cold drinks and food again.
Rule out an allergy.
One thing you need to do is consult your healthcare provider to make sure that you are not allergic to a certain food. Frequently an allergy to a food can cause you to develop sore spots or hypersensitive spots in the soft tissues in your mouth. The best way to rule out an allergy is to see your doctor, who will be able to give you more information. If it turns out that you are allergic to a food and that has been causing the issues, simply avoid the allergen and you should experience an improvement rather quickly.
Discuss with Us
If you do not have a food allergy, there is a strong possibility that your sensitivity is coming from an issue with your teeth. There are several potential dental issues that could cause you to become hypersensitive to heat or cold (or both). These issues include, but are certainly not limited, to tooth decay, broken or drastically worn teeth, a chip or crack in your enamel, exposed tooth roots, fillings that are beginning to wear out, and gum disease.
At Holman Family Dentistry, we know all the things that can cause you to become sensitive to extreme temperatures, and we can perform a thorough inspection to discover the cause of your issue. Depending on the exact causes, we may be able to correct the matter in the same visit, or we may need you to return at a later date for more dental work.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to reduce the sensitivity. Note that these things won’t fix the issue that is causing the sensitivity, so it really is important that you come visit us. However, while you’re waiting for your appointment, you could try things such as desensitizing toothpaste to help numb the discomfort.
