Fall Foods That Improve Your Oral Health

As another year begins to wind down and we find ourselves firmly in the autumn season with upcoming holidays, we are also reminded that this is the time of year when lots of sweet treats and rich foods, which can be harmful to our teeth, will be consumed at restaurants and dinner tables all over the country. This inspired us to share a few seasonal foods with our patients that can actually have a positive impact on dental health. Here are just some of the many examples:

Dairy Options

Foods which are high in calcium have long been known to aid in many oral health functions and overall health. Milk and yogurt are two of the best options when it comes to dairy products. Remember though, it is not only important what kind of dairy you consume, but also the ingredients of the product itself.

When it comes to milk, avoid the hormones and additives which are commonly found in today’s brands. Organic and even raw milk is the best choice. As far as yogurt goes, you will want to avoid those with added sugar.

Nuts

While nearly all nuts can offer some type of health benefit (when enjoyed in moderation), cashews, almonds and walnuts are especially good for oral health. The higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids do wonders for your gum tissue health and tooth strength. They are loaded with beneficial vitamins and minerals which work together to improve everything from saliva production to a reducing bacteria and harmful germs.

Fruit and Veggies

What is more beautiful than an apple orchid in the fall where hundreds of bright and colorful red, green and yellow fruits are scattered among the many apple trees? Apples also provide a number of dental health advantages.

One is that because they are mostly made up of water, which means they stimulate saliva production when you eat them. They are also full of fiber, which acts like an astringent of sorts. Remember to leave the skin on though, as many of the nutrients are found there. Leafy, green vegetables such as collard greens, kale and spinach are all also highly beneficial.
