There are several times where we could end up needing oral surgery. No matter what occasion that may mean for you, there are a few things to make sure you do to be prepared. You need to make sure you have everything you need on hand, since going out right after is not realistic. Plus, you also need to make sure your home is ready before your surgery begins. Here are a few tips to make getting ready for oral surgery a bit easier.
What to Have on Hand for Oral Surgery Recovery
You want to make sure to have as many soft, yet healthy foods on hand as you can. You will need to eat carefully following the surgery. This can include things like eggs, yogurt, soup, and ice cream. Make sure you do not get anything that requires you to drink out of a straw, as that can lead to a dislodged clot and bleeding.
You will also need to make sure you have some gauze and some over-the-counter pain relievers in the house, just in case. Most oral surgery has some bleeding as a result, so it is best to have a little on hand to swap out if you start bleeding.
Set Up Where You Will Sleep Before Oral Surgery Begins
One of the best ways to speed up healing after oral surgery is to sleep upright for the first 1-3 nights, depending on what type of surgery you had. You should prop yourself up at about a 45 degree angle. This means putting some pillows around you and making sure you have plenty of blankets. Just make sure you sit on a couch or recliner where you won’t fall out when sleeping!
Things to Make Sure You Remember the Day of Your Surgery
Even if we’ve seen you here for years, you still need to bring your ID and insurance information the day of surgery. Plus, you are also going to need someone to drive you home. Depending on your surgery, you may get a prescription for some medication afterwards, so ideally, have someone you trust picking up a prescription for you do the driving.
