The Benefits of Gargling with Saltwater

The Benefits of Gargling with Saltwater

Saltwater gargles really are effective – even if you did hear about it from your grandma first.  Grandma might not have known about the science that backs it up, but there is indeed scientific proof that the saltwater gargle is effective.  Using saltwater creates a sort of osmosis effect and the salt concentration draws fluids from your mouth that are painful, and it also helps to relieve a painful infection.  The saltwater breaks up mucus and irritants and all sorts of fungi from the throat.  However, it is recommended that you only gargle no more than two or three times a day, as too much gargling is not good either. Balance is the key.

What are the Benefits of Gargling with Saltwater?

Soothe Inflammation and Infection:

Saltwater gargles alleviate a multitude of problems, the first of which is a sore throat and throat irritation.  The gargle is especially helpful with throat inflammation caused by seasonal allergies, colds, and sinus infections.  However, this simple remedy can help prevent an infection from incurring twice.

Decrease of Harmful Bacteria in the Mouth:

Saltwater is a neutralizer of acids that cause bacteria to multiply in the mouth.  Therefore, this helps keep a balance pH level which is what fights and prevents gingivitis (gum disease).  The saltwater takes away the bacteria’s favorite hiding place which is a steamy and acidic home to live in.  Saltwater guards against the spread of infections (fungal) such as Candidiasis, which is a yeast infection that invades the mouth and throat.

Nasal Passageways Cleared:

A saltwater gargle is one of the best things to clear your passages from a head and chest congestion-based flu.  The saltwater gargle thins the throat of the mucus build up in your respiratory tracts and the nasal cavities.

How to Gargle Saltwater:

Tilt your head back, take a large sip and then gargle for about 30 seconds, swishing the water around in your mouth, teeth, and gums before you spit it out.  However, just one sip will not do – repeat the method until your cup of water is finished – and you can repeat every four to six hours until your sore throat subsides.  Warning though, if after three days, and you still have a sore throat, it’s time to call the doctor.
