In order to ensure optimal oral and overall health proper dental care is essential.
Problems that can Occur
Dental health in older adults can begin to diminish, especially if proper oral health care is not obtained. When proper brushing and flossing takes place, you can help to decrease the likelihood of common oral health ailments, including gum disease, decaying roots, tooth loss, decreased sense of taste and dry mouth. In very serious cases, oral cancer can also become a risk as well as the risk of a misaligned jaw due to excessive tooth loss.
Nutritional Deficiencies
When oral health problems occur in older adults, they can begin to suffer from nutritional deficiencies simply because they are unable to eat nutritious food. If natural teeth fall out or the ability to chew is diminished, it can be difficult to consume the right foods, which can lead to even more health problem that require medical attention.
It is vital that older adults keep up their oral health by brushing and flossing their teeth at least twice a day. It is also important to keep all dental appointments, with a frequency of at least once every six months, unless more frequent appointments are recommended to rectify a dental problem.
